The Village of Essex Junction voters passed a non-binding advisory article during their April 2021 Annual Meeting for the Village Board of Trustees to draft a new charter to create an independent City of Essex Junction, since the vote to reconsider the Plan of Merger with the Town of Essex failed. The advisory vote did not "bind" or make any legal charter change. The Board of Trustees have spent the ensuing months working on a charter for an independent City of Essex Junction, which will be presented to Village voters on November 2, 2021. If approved by Village voters, the charter would need to go to the Vermont Legislature for review and approval before the Village of Essex Junction could separate from the Town of Essex and become an independent city. Visit www.essexjunction.org/independence for more information or www.greateressex2020.org for more information on previous merger efforts. Town Public Forums
The Essex Selectboard hosted three facilitated, public forums in August to hear from residents throughout the entire community about how the Town of Essex can prepare for the Village of Essex Junction's coming separation vote and subsequent Vermont Legislative decision on the creation of an independent City of Essex Junction.
The forums focused on the interim period of the Village's effort, better described as the time between now and when the Vermont Legislature makes a decision on whether or not to approve the Village becoming an independent city (assuming Village voters vote in favor of separating from the Town of Essex).
At the forums, residents shared what they are paying attention to and what they value during the interim period. The Selectboard may use the feedback in the coming weeks and months to help make decisions that best serve the entire community, without favoring one group or another during the interim phase.

If you were unable to attend any of the public forums, the Town Selectboard would still like to hear from you. Please send your comments by emailing or writing to the board members.
